「我々合衆国国民は、より完全な連邦を形成し、正義を樹立し、国内の平穏を保障し、共同の防衛に備え、全体の福祉を増進し、我らと我らの子孫に自由のもたらす恵沢を確保する目的を遂げようと、アメリカ合衆国のためにこの憲法を確定し制定する」
“We the people of the United States,in order to form a more perfect Union,establish Justice,insure domestic Tranquility,provide for the common defense,promote the general Welfare,and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
格調高く、力強い。憲法の目的が明確に述べられている。
一方、日本国憲法の冒頭。小学生に言い聞かせる如く、民主主義の自明のルールが述べられている。制定者が同じ国民である証拠も見られる。文章の始まり方や構造、「我らと我らの子孫」「自由のもたらす恵沢」などの用語がそれ。作り直し、千年後にも通用する高邁な理想を掲げられないものか。
「日本国民は、正当に選挙された国会における代表者を通じて行動し、われらとわれらの子孫のために、諸国民との協和による成果と、わが国全土にわたって自由のもたらす恵沢を確保し、政府の行為によって再び戦争の惨禍が起ることのないやうにすることを決意し、ここに主権が国民に存することを宣言し、この憲法を確定する。そもそも国政は…」

こう書いてみると、表意文字である漢字の有り難さが身に染みる。同じ内容でも短い。即ち、早く理解できる。漢字を覚えるのは大変だけれども…。
