“My wife,”a sad-eyed husband told his doctor,“is going to the stage where I think we'll have to move in with help of some kind. She burst into tears at the drop of a hat this morning. She wept for an hour because she saw a dog with a broken leg.”“That's not so bad.”nodded the doctor. “Many women are particularly sensitive about the suffering animals. I think my own wife might cry at the sight of a dog with a broken leg.”“You didn't let me finish my story,”said the husband.“This particular dog was in a box of animal crackers.”
「私の妻は、」悲しげな目をした夫が医師に言った。「ある種の援助が受けられる所へ移らねばならないと思われる段階に至ろうとしています。今朝は、確とした理由も無しに突然泣き出しました。脚の折れた犬を見たからといって、１時間涙を流したのです」「そんな程度ならあまりひどいとは言えないでしょう」医師はうなずいた。「女性の多くは、傷を負っている動物には特に敏感に反応するようです。私自身の妻も脚の折れた犬を見れば泣くだろうと思いますよ」「話を最後まで聞いてください」夫は続けた。「今お話ししている犬は、動物ビスケットの箱の中にいたんですよ」
